"8-man football"

The LHSAA should really consider bringing back 8-man football for small schools.

St. John not only beat East Iberville last night, but you can tell by the Tiger's body language and un-inspired play that they we had also completely demoralized them. They had given up after we scored our first TD.

There were one or two players on their team that kept trying. I have to give them credit for that. But as a whole, their team was basically just going through the motions. They didn't want to be there.

This is not a knock against EI, their players or coaches. I think I would be discouraged too if I only had 18 players dressed out. But that brings me back to my point about the 8-man football.

With so few players, it is difficult to field an 11-man team. 90% of their starters played the entire game. That being said, they still have 6 wins. One of them was against a school from Mississippi, so they are still better that 5 other Louisiana schools. That leads me to believe that may be a number of small schools that would be willing to convert to an 8-team format in an effort to be able to be more competetive on regular basis.

I know the School for the Deaf used to play 8-man football against other deaf schools from different states. Does anyone know if other states have divisions for 8-man football?

Do you think this could work in Louisiana?

I know Houma Christian used to play 8-man football in the Christian league before they became a member of the LHSAA.

I know a school like Lutheran would benefit from 8-man football. Last year they dressed 11 players, no joke here. This year, not playing football because they could not even get the 11-man team up.

Several of the private schools up here in North Louisiana play 8 man football. Some of them might join in if the LHSAA sponsored a statewide division.

This is true about Lutheran. A ref told me this story recently: Last year they dressed out 11, the minimum they have to have on the field is eight or nine. They had injuries that made that number, whatever it was, untenable. They'd have a kid with a sprained ankle near the sideline step off the field when the ball was snapped.

The refs were told they couldn't do it anymore.

LHSAA has never had 8-man football...

you need different fields for 8-man

other states play 6-man and 9-man

My dad and uncle both played 8-man football at Sunshine High (currenltly East Iberville) back in the 60's. It may not have been sanctioned by the LHSAA but there must have been other schools that had it as well.
